I have just discovered I did not write a review for An Ancient Love Song, despite it being one of my favorite dramas in 2023. An Ancient Love Song, which has a rating of 8.6 on Douban and is ranked ninth among the highest-rated Chinese dramas of 2023!
Synopsys
The male lead of “An Ancient Love Song“, Shen Buyan, is a modern history book writer. According to his historical data, he learned that during the Yuanqi period, the Nansheng Empress Lu Yuan lived an extravagant life and caused political chaos. The emperor only favored her in the country and even cut off six palaces because of her. She is known as the “demon queen” in history.
Shen Buyan (Guo Jia Nan) accidentally got a broken jade piece that was very similar to the one in his dream. When he was late for work, he suddenly traveled to the Nine Kingdoms and met the “demon queen” Lu Yuan (Zhang Ya Qin). However, this demon queen was very different from what he remembered from history. Instead, she looked like a friend he hadn’t seen for a long time. Shen Buyan made a deal with Lu Yuan: Lu Yuan would ask him three questions and he would do three things with him: wear ancient costumes, eat with him, and spend the festival together.
C-Drama Review – An Ancient Love Song
An Ancient Love Song chinese drama is a low-cost production, and it is said that the crew is very poor. However, the camera work, composition, or action are not inferior to big-budget Chinese dramas. Very high quality! Although the actors are not very well-known, their acting skills are all online. The male lead Guo Jia Nan has a very attractive face, and he becomes more and more handsome the more you watch him. The female lead Zhang Ya Qin is really well-chosen. I remember her deeply because of this drama. Director Zhi Zhu is very good at filming. Not only are the actors beautiful, the scenes are also beautiful. The ending is not very good, but it is the best for Shen Buyan and Lu Yuan. As Director Zhi Zhu said: ”They both left warm and sincere memories in each other’s lives, which is not bad luck.”
This is a short 14 episode drama. So it’s well paced and there is no filler. I would have liked to have seen a few more episodes or longer ones as I think there is enough material to delve deeper into each timeline and backstory.
If you are usually intimidated by long Chinese period dramas, it is the perfect length to start with. You will be treated to a touching romance told creatively with reverse timelines. Watch, stop, think, and enjoy.
